A university is an institution of multidisciplinary training for professionals with higher education, research, extension and field and cultivation of human knowledge. [1] A university provides both tertiary education (undergraduate) and quaternary (graduate). According Mazzari Junior "universities enjoy autonomy to execute its purposes, in strict compliance with the constitutional text, but this right does not prohibit the State to verify the use of this prerogative in the activities of their own."


Within the modern definition, the first universities emerged in medieval Europe during the Renaissance of the twelfth century.In a broader definition, the Academy, founded in 387 BC by the Greek philosopher Plato in the grove near Athens Academos, can be understood as the first university. Here students were taught philosophy, mathematics and gymnastics. There was, however, actually a university, as each thinker founded a school to share knowledge, not to discuss them. However, only in the Middle Ages was that universities were established body and won by the Catholic Church where his students learned the faith related subjects, such as theology, philosophy and languages.The first European universities were founded in Italy and France to study law, medicine and theology. Before that, there were similar institutions in the Islamic world, the most famous being that of Cairo. In Asia, the institution of higher education was the most important of Nalanda in Bihar, India, where the second century Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna.In Europe young men were heading to university after completing the study of the trivium: the preparatory arts of grammar, rhetoric and logic or dialectic, and the quadrivium: arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. [5] [6] [7] [8 ]The University is the oldest Portuguese University of Coimbra, initially founded in Lisbon in 1290, one of Europe's 10 oldest in continuous operation.In Brazil, the oldest institution with university status is the Federal University of Paraná, formed in 1912 as University of Paraná. Other institutions of higher education in Brazil are older, but did not enjoy the status of university before 1912.Universities are generally established by statute or charter. In the UK, a university is defined by a royal charter and only institutions with such a document can offer degrees of any kind.In the last decades of the twentieth century, a number of universities with more than 100,000 students was created, taught through distance learning techniques.
