Within the modern definition, the first universities emerged in medieval Europe during the Renaissance of the twelfth century.In a broader definition, the Academy, founded in 387 BC by the Greek philosopher Plato in the grove near Athens Academos, can be understood as the first university. Here students were taught philosophy, mathematics and gymnastics. There was, however, actually a university, as each thinker founded a school to share knowledge, not to discuss them.
