University History
The history of the University of Coimbra dates back to the century following the very foundation of the Portuguese nation, since the University was established in the thirteenth century, in 1290.
But first, in 1288, was drafted a Petition to Pope Nicholas IV (which only knows the shuttle) dated 17 November 1288 and signed by the abbots of monasteries of Alcobaça, Santa Cruz de Coimbra and S. Vicente de Lisboa and the top 24 churches and convents of the kingdom.
This document called for the establishment of a "General Survey" and those religious institutions assumed the guarantee of funding. It is not known if the Petition came to the Holy .
